Common Butterwort

Rosette of fleshy entire leaves. Leaves green to pale yellow-green, oval to egg-shaped, with inrolled edges. Upper leaf surface covered with sticky stalked glands that capture small insects; other stalkless glands then digest the insects. Stems thin, leafless, supporting single flower. Flowers deep violet-blue, rarely white, 1 in. across, 2-lipped, the upper lip with 2 lobes, lower lip longer with 3 lobes, throat hairy. Grows in wet serpentine banks, edges of streams, bogs, mossy seeps, from near coast to subalpine. Similar P. macroceras grows in moist rocky serpentine, has yellow-green leaves and spur.
