Found in Thailand, Malaysia, Borneo and Sumatra in mixed, montane, mossy forests at elevations of 900 to 2500 meters as a small to just medium sized, warm to cold growing epiphtye or terrestrial in moss cushions with globose pseudobulbs carrying lanceolate-oblong, obtuse, tough, narrowing below into the elongate channeled petiolate base leaves that blooms in the spring through fall on a straight, many flowered, distant, 12" [30 cm] long, glabrous inflorescence with the often fragrant flowers facing in all directions

The variety densissimum [photo by A Schuiteman] has an inflorescence with 60 to 150 flowers instead of the 5 to 25 flowers of the type.
