 Recognition
  • a clump-forming herbaceous plant usually growing up to 80 cm tall.
  • its stems are oval in cross-section and are usually winged.
  • its long and narrow leaves (10-60 cm long and 5-11 mm wide) are mostly clustered at the base of the plant.
  • its branched flower clusters are borne and the tips of the stems and produce numerous bright blue flowers.
  • these short-lived flowers have six 'petals' and only open for a few hours in the morning.
  • its oblong capsules (12-20 mm long) have three compartments and contain numerous brown seeds.
