In her left hand Melpomene, Muse of Tragedy, holds one of the masks worn by actors in the ancient world as their principal attribute. Both the type of clothing, a mantle and tunic, and the pose are habitual in depictions of the Muses. Among the various restored elements the most visible is the right forearm, of which the carving is not finished.
