Turawera/Shaking Brake (Pteris tremula)

Turawera/Shaking Brake (Pteris tremula) is an erect ground fern indigenous to New Zealand with a wide distribution around the country. In the South Island P. tremula is mostly confined to the north east, including Nelson, Marlborough, and the Marlborough Sounds. The species is also found in Australia, Vanuatu and Fiji. Altitude range is from sea level to around 500 metres, and habitat is quite diverse, with the ability to colonise a wide range of locations.
The species is cultivated as a garden plant due to its hardiness and easy cultivation although it can become weedy.
This example was observed in a gully the Sutherland Stream catchment area of the Wither Hills Farm Park.
