Did you know❓ Found in parts of Kenya, South Africa and Madagascar, the Coleochloa setifera plant is harvested for its use in brooms as the bristles. They are often used and sold locally into markets that reach local towns and cities. 🌱🌍 In this picture, we see women carrying leaves of the Coleochloa setifera in Mount Mulanje, Malawi. Although not a globally threatened species, population pressures, overexploitation of the mountain resources and invasive species are causing issues in habitats where these plants grow. We've just published a new paper on the population density of spotted hyaena in Ruaha-Rungwa. This study uses camera trap data we collected in 2018 & 2019 in collaboration with Southern Tanzania Elephant Program (STEP), and is one of the first population assessments for the species in Tanzania. Across four surveyed sites, we found the highest population density in the core tourist area of Ruaha NP, intermediate densities in Rungwa Game Reserve and MBOMIPA WMA, and the lowest density in the miombo woodland of Ruaha NP. Spotted hyaena densities were generally positively correlated with densities of lion and leopard. Our results suggest that spotted hyaena density is influenced by prey availability and protection, and the species may be less resilient to human pressures than widely thought. For my cartography course map portfolio, I created a map showcasing the agroecological regions of Ethiopia. Ethiopia's agroecology is diverse and is primarily determined by elevation. The higher the altitude, the cooler the temperature. However, it's worth noting that Ethiopia is home to one of the world's hottest inhabitable places, the Denakil Depression. Despite this, there is also Mount Ras Dashen, the highest peak, which has an ice cap at the top.

Fostering Peaceful Cohabitation Between People And Elephants In Namibia | Managing Director at EHRA - Elephant Human Relations Aid
Do you know the incredible history of Namibia's desert-dwelling elephants? In the 18th century, the elephant population in Namibia was roughly 2,500 - 3,500. However, the latter half of the 19th century brought significant challenges due to hunting and illegal poaching, leading to a substantial decline in their numbers. This decline escalated human settlements, which, in turn, caused conflicts between humans and wildlife, posing a significant danger to the elephant species. During the Namibian War of Independence in the 1970s-80s, the desert elephants disappeared from the Ugab River. But in the late '90s, a bold elephant bull named Voortrekker (meaning 'first walker') ventured south and led Mama Afrika, a group of elephant herd, back to the Ugab River. These resilient elephants prove that home is where the herd is! ❤️🐘 And the heartwarming tale continues… Today, looking back into history, I am filled with a sense of awe and gratitude. I've had the privilege to witness not just one but FIVE matriarchal herds in the Ugab and Huab River regions. One of the crucial lessons this journey imparts is the undeniable influence of our actions on the natural world. It emphasises the responsibility we hold in ensuring the harmonious coexistence of humanity and wildlife. So, let us strive to learn from the past and work towards a future where both humans and elephants can thrive together. #Education #Conservation #Elephants #Africa
