White stinkwood is frost hardy and moderately drought resistant. It is a medium to large deciduous tree which grows at a medium rate. Celtis africana hybridizes with non-indigenous Celtis cinensis. The latter is very frost hardy and has hard, hairless leaves, while the indigenous Stinkwood has a soft, hairy leaves. Cinensis has a very aggressive root system and seedlings tends to spread in the garden. Africana does not have these negative characteristics. Because of this hybridization, one gets in the nursery industry a variety of trees between these two extremes. If you desire a “pure” Celtis africana, make sure that you buy it from a reliable nursery. White stinkwood does well in a container and responds positively to pruning. It is a popular bonsai.

Value to honeybees: Nectar, N0;  Pollen, P0-2;  Flowering months 8-10.   (See  blog-post "The bee-value of South Africa's trees" for an explanation of codes)
