This small, compact and hardy Hebe is a tidy and low growing variety, the evergreen glossy mid to dark green leaves that have a slight yellow margin and an abundance of small, pure white spike looking flowers in summer. The bright appearance throughout the summer is a great attraction to butterflies and bees.
The Hebe ‘White Gem’ is ideal for coastal gardens, rock gardens, small cottage gardens and even city roof top gardens due to its compact nature. It’s often used in modern garden designs, working well alongside slate and gravel areas. As well as individual specimen plants, they can be used to form a compact alternative hedge.
A well-drained soil with full sun or partial shade with some shelter is an ideal position for this Hebe ‘White Gem’. Hebe’s require little maintenance and needs only a light pruning to keep its shape, just a small trim after flowering could also encourage a second flush of bloom, being a compact variety, this will grow and spread to approximately 50cm x 50cm. They can be planted at a spacing of 3-5 per metre.
To ensure a good start for your Hebe we recommend that the planting area is cleared of all weeds and the ground dug over well. Bonemeal fertiliser and Rootgrow mycorrhizal fungi when planting gives plants a head start and encourages strong growth. Rootgrow should come into direct contact with the roots of the plant when planting while bonemeal should be well mixed with the soil that is used to backfill around the plant. There is a useful guide to planting on our How to plant a hedge website page, we also send a colour copy of this with your plant delivery.
