Plant description

Bauhinia galpinii, the red orchid tree, is a sprawling, large shrub to small tree. It is an easy care plant. It flowers over a long period, from late spring to autumn, and the bright orange-red flowers are attractive to nectar loving birds and to butterflies, bees and insects. It makes a good informal hedging plant or specimen plant, and can also be grown in a large container for some years. If grown next to a support, the growth can become twining and climbing, making it good for training as an espalier if required.

Bauhinia is moderately frost and drought tolerant once established. Responds well to pruning. Best in a sunny position. Can be grown on a wide range of soil types, performs best on a moist well drained soil.
