Ruschia

Its name was chosen in honor of Ernst Julius Rusch, a Namibian farmer. This genus includes about 300 different species: it is the largest genus of the Mesembi group (which includes the species that, by color or shape, resemble stones or pebbles). Their stems are succulent or sometimes woody. If succulent, they are bluish-green. The leaves, also bluish-green, are usually tetrahedral in shape, reduced or transformed into thorns in some species. This is to minimize the evaporation of water from the leaves and thus survive in their extreme environments, characterized by long dry periods, high temperatures and extreme intensity of sunlight. Frequently used as a ground cover for gardens, flower beds or rocky edges, but also for creating green spaces in large cities, due to its great tolerance to pollution. Its strong point though are the inflorescences: in spring, the carpet of small fleshy green leaves will color your rooms or outdoor spaces with wonderful purple flowers, that will burst in color and perfume for several days! Here are some easy tips for its proper care and cultivation: It likes a lot of brightness, however be sure to avoid direct sunlight. It likes hot climates, but also withstands temperatures down to several degrees below 0°C! It is advisable to water moderately, never before the soil is completely dry. A well-drained substrate is an optimal solution, for example enriched with sand or stony materials. They do not need frequent fertilization, it is sufficient to dilute a specific fertilizer with watering once a year.
