Centrosema virginianum or Butterfly Pea is a small, perennial climber grown for its lovely pale violet flowers around 4cms across that resemble a butterfly on the wing.
Single flowers are produced in the leaf axils, though sometimes 2-4 flowers will bloom from the single location.
Flowers are short lived - around one day, but the plant produces more at the same rate so you retain a good display through late summer.
Although a climber, it will also make a good groundcover.
It has extensive root systems so is good to stabilise soil to restrict erosion.
But the main reason for growing this plant is the pretty flowers to feats the eyes on and the birds, bees and butterflies that will be drawn to your garden to pollinate it.
