Rosa rubiginosa (or rosa eglanteria) from Europe and Western Asia is known as Sweet Briar Rose.
This is a dense, deciduous shrub with distinctly hooked and spiky prickles. As such it makes an excellent barrier or hedge and will naturally form dense thickets if left to its own devices.
It has apple scented, serrated margin foliage around 6-7cms long.
In spring to mid summer it produces pink single blooms around 2-3 cms in diameter with five petals that feature white centres and prominent yellow stamen.
The rose hips are particularly prized to make infusions that are rich in vitamin C - and it was the mainstay for access to vitamin C for the British during world war two.
