Cunonia capensis or Red alder can be either a single trunked, small tree or a bushy, evergreen shrub.
It has shiny green leaves that are divided into multiple leaflets which have a reddish tinge to them.
in summer/autumn it produces sprays of 8cm long, creamy white, bottle-brush style flowers on stalks that exude a lovely fragrance.
Grown largely as an ornamental tree in domestic gardens for its fine foliage and fragrant flowers. Non-invasive roots mean it can be planted relatively close to building.
