Thelesperma filifolium (Greenthread) is a bushy, annual, biennial, or short-lived perennial forming a clump of slender, branched stems clad with finely-divided, bright green leaves. The common name “Greenthread” refers to the thread-like appearance of the foliage. From late spring to mid-summer, a profusion of daisy-like, bright yellow flowers, 2 in. across (5 cm), are borne atop wiry leafless stems. They feature 8 broad yellow ray florets around a center of several dozen disc florets, usually reddish brown. The urn-shaped bloom buds droop downward prior to opening. Rich in nectar, the flowers attract many butterflies and other pollinators. Tolerant to drought, this United States native prefers disturbed sites in dry, sandy, or gravelly soil. Plant in mass for a terrific blanket of golden color in a naturalized area, or as an accent in the flower garden.

  • Grows up to 10-30 in. tall (25-75 cm) and 15-24 in. wide (37-60 cm). Will reseed itself well.
  • Performs best in full sun in dry, sandy, or gravelly soils. Drought tolerant.
  • Welcomed addition to wildflower gardens, cottage gardens, or prairies and meadows.
  • Easy to grow, and relatively pest and disease free, this plant is a favorite of butterflies, but is ignored by deer.
  • Deadhead to prolong flowering. Leave a few plants to die down and self-seed.
  • Easily propagated by seed. Sow in situ in autumn. Alternatively, cold stratify for 15-45 days and sow at 60-70ºF (15-20ºC) in late winter or early spring. Sow in situ in mid-to-late spring.
  • Native to Central United States, Northern Mexico, and the Southern United States.
