Cranesbill, or hardy geraniums, are perennial border plants with saucer-shaped flowers in shades of pink, purple and blue. They're easy to grow, thrive in shade and flower for months. Geraniums are popular in cottage garden schemes and offer a long season of pollen and nectar for a number of pollinators, particularly bees.
Native to southern Europe, Geranium nodosum is one of the best cranesbills for growing in dry shade. Flowering prolifically from summer to autumn, it bears delicate, trumpet-shaped blooms high above semi-evergreen foliage. It self-seeds readily and is easy to grow. Geranium nodosum 'Clos du Coudray' is a particularly attractive variety, bearing small violet flowers with reddish veining, above dark glossy leaves. It’s more tolerant of sun than some cultivars.
Grow in well-drained soil in partial to full shade. Remove tired leaves and divide congested clumps in spring.
