Abutilon megapotamicum "cold hardy clone" (trailing abutilon) is a deciduous/semi evergreen shrub with red and yellow flowers.  We were collecting Abutilon cultivars in a friend's garden near Salem, OR a few years ago and heard an extremely loud humming sound - we went to explore and founds HUNDREDS of humming birds swamping around Abutilon megapotamicum "cold hardy clone".  Unfortunately, the label was no longer on the plant (so we are calling it "cold hardy clone"), but of the many dozens of cultivars in the garden, this was by far the largest and most floriferous of them all.  In that climate, most abutilons die back to the ground but Abutilon megapotamicum "cold hardy clone" hadn't had any top damage in several years and had sprawled (climbed with support by branches) into a tree and was easily 10' tall with THOUSANDS of flowers.  For us in North Carolina, it blooms late spring until really hard killing frost.

  • HARDINESS:  zones 7-9
  • EXPOSURE:  part shade to sun
  • SIZE:   3-4'  (taller with support)
  • SHIPPING SIZE:  1/2 gallon pot.  15" plant (pruned for best cultural practice).  See last photo for example.
