This bunch-grass species is native to central and eastern US prairie ecosystems. In a home garden, it makes a nice ornamental with its tall stems and interesting yellow flowers. Hardy to a variety of conditions, but thrives particularly in lowlands and full sun. After the first year, no fertilizer or watering is needed. Commonly grows alongside switchgrass, little bluestem, and big bluestem.
Ideal for pollinators, erosion control, ecological restoration, livestock grazing, and providing food for birds and small mammals.
To plant: lightly till or rake the area to be planted. Broadcast seed by hand over the area. Cover with a thin layer of straw or other light mulch. Keep the area evenly moist until germination, which occurs in 2-3 weeks. If planted in spring to early summer, flowers can be expected in September.
