Trachystemon orientalis is a perennial ground cover plant of the Boraginacea family. Close to the borage, especially the inflorescence that is very similar to it, it is sometimes also called Borago orientalis.
Trachystemon orientalis is native to the undergrowth of Asia and Southern Europe. Introduced as an ornamental ground cover, it is also a vegetable in Turkey.
Description of Trachystemon orientalis
This Boraginace develops rhizomes that allow the plant to spread out and form a carpet of cordiform leaves 20 to 40 cm in height. The leaves are up to 30 cm long and 20 cm wide. The limb is hairy and has a nice embossed appearance. The port is reminiscent of Hosta, although the plant can expand without limit. The flowering, relatively early, begins the cycle of the plant in March April. The stems rise to 60 cm in height, hairy, they produce many small flowers 1 to 2 cm wide, with curved blue petals, and with clustered stamens and pistil that point forward. The leaves develop fully afterwards, and disappear in winter.
Culture of the Caucasus boreage
Trachystemon orientalis is easily grown in all types of soil a little humiferous, in the shade or in mid-shade, but its leaves will be all the most spectacular in the shade in a cool terrain. On the other hand, in the shade, it blooms much less, but then offers a perfectly homogeneous ground cover.
The Caucasus borage is also able to develop in dry shade, one of the most difficult situations for the gardener to implement. Another advantage is that the plant leaves spread out and prevent weeds from growing, making weeding useless. Sometimes the Caucasus borage may seem too enterprising with regard to neighboring plants, perhaps this is an opportunity to make a dish, since it is an excellent mineral-rich food.
It is installed in the spring or late summer, when the soil becomes cool again. Easy culture, it doesn't really require care.
Multiplication of the Caucasus boreage
Trachystemon orientalis spreads easily by tuft division. On a plant installed in the spring or late summer, when it has rained, a piece of rhizome with a few rosettes of leaves is severed with a solid vertical spade. The set is then transplanted into place as soon as possible.
Caucasian borage seeds germinate and grow quickly without any problems. They should be planted in humiferous soil as soon as they are ripe.
Use and ownership of Trachystemon orientalis
In addition to its ornamental appearance, Trachystemon orientalis is a plant rich in trace elements and can be considered a food. Its leaves, stems and flowers are eaten like spinach and are, it seems, delicious, fried in butter with onion and incorporated into the omelette. However, the leaves must be vigorously washed to remove their hair.
Trachystemon orientalis is also used in some countries as a medicinal plant, considered a purifying, emollient and antipyretic.
In addition serious research shows that Trachystemon orientalis has fungicide properties. An aquatic leaf solution becomes an effective natural fungicide to protect plants from mushroom attacks.
