Malus floribunda - Japanese flowering crabapple

Commonly known as the Japanese flowering crabapple, Malus floribunda is a deciduous tree native to Japan. Due to its stunning floral display and attractive fruit, it has become a popular choice in gardens and landscapes around the world.

Typically reaching heights of around 6.0-8.0 metres, it has a rounded, spreading canopy. Its glossy, dark green leaves are ovate and have a serrated edge.

Before the foliage emerges, Malus floribunda has a fragrant, pinky white flower which blossoms profusely in spring.

After the flowering season, small, rounded crab apples begin to form. Ranging from yellow to red, they are a valuable food source for birds and wildlife.

Relatively low-maintenance, this tree will adapt to its environmental conditions. It prefers full sun to partial shade in moist, well-drained soil. Regular pruning helps maintain the shape and promotes flowering, however it is not essential.
