The event was a great success with some of the community members of Kyalami showing up to be more educated about their surroundings. They explored different sections of the conservancy to discover new plants.

Oenothera rosea (rose evening primrose).

“Unfortunately, due to the late rains and very dry conditions there were not that many plants and flowers found but there were still some very enjoyable flowers and insects spotted on the walk,” said Van Niekerk.

Some of the attendees watch as Anton van Niekerk identifies a plant.

He references Field Guide to the Wild Flowers of the Highveld as a means to identify plants and flowers that he might not know offhand. “It is always an enjoyable outing to discover the hidden gems that make up our natural veld. We discovered about 12 trees that we did not know about and an estimated 40 to 50 other types of plants.

“Trees, grasses, succulents, herbs and phorbs [a herbaceous flowering plant] all get attention as well as dragonflies, damselflies, beetles, bees and any other insects found, and of course, any birds spotted or heard.”
