Originating from Japan and Korea, Fatsia Japonica make for a great indoor or outdoor plant. These broadleaf evergreen plants are commonly known as the Japanese Aralia. This particular plant can grow into a tree as tall as 10 feet high. If they are in the right environment, you may even see flowers bloom in the fall on your Fatsia. Although they are good outdoor plants, the Fatsia Japonica Variegata is far less hardy and shouldn’t be planted outside unless it is in a particularly warmer climate.
- Light
The Fatsia will appreciate a medium to bright indirect light setting. Direct sunlight should always be avoided as it can burn the leaves. A shady spot that still gets natural light is perfect.
- Water
The Fatsia likes to be kept evenly moist to encourage growth. Let the top ¼ of the soil dry out before watering but make sure to never let the whole plant dry out. When it is ready to be watered, give it enough so water pours out the drainage holes.
- Humidity
The Fatsia does not necessarily need extra humidity to thrive but you should avoid putting it near warm or cold drafts (i.e door or air vent).
- Soil
Fatsia Japonica is not too particular on the type of soil it needs. As long a you use a well draining potting soil your Fatsia will be happy. We recommend Fox Farm Ocean Forest Potting Soil.
- Fertilizer
During the spring and summer months, make sure to fertilize your Fatsia regularly to ensure your plant is getting enough nutrients. Cut back in the winter months as they go dormant so they won’t need plant food.
