BGCI hosted a BGCI webinar on on Thursday 17 November, 10am GMT: The Red List of Dipterocarpaceae

The Red List of Dipterocarpaceae will be the first comprehensive assessment of the conservation status all 535 species of dipterocarp. Dipterocarpaceae is one of the largest tree families, and also one of the most threatened with over 60% of taxa at risk of extinction in the wild. This report is one of the largest taxonomic Red Lists to be produced as part of the Global Tree Assessment.

This report has been a long time coming. To complete this work there has been a huge collaborative effort, working with forestry departments and experts from the countries with the highest species diversity who have been sharing their knowledge and such keen collaborators.

Dr SK Ganesan,  Principal Researcher, National Parks Board, Singapore Botanic Gardens: Dr S.K. Ganesan is a Singaporean systematic botanist specialising in a few families of forest trees (e.g., Malvaceae, Anacardiaceae, Dipterocarpaceae) and has interests in botanical history and ethnobotany. Dr Ganesan now works primarily in plant diversity studies, but he also has a background in urban forestry and arboriculture. Ganesan presented  Bark matters an introduction to dipterocarps.

Dr Lilian Chua Director of Forest Biodiversity Division: Lilian presented Conservation strategies for Dipterocarpaceae in Malaysia. Lilian has been a champion for the Global Tree Assessment these past seven years, she is a forest botanist turned conservationist, focusing mainly on in-situ landscape and species based approaches to mitigate population loss of threatened plant species. She has been involved in the national red listing project since 1998 and subsequent engagements with key local stakeholders to conserve threatened populations. 

Eyen Khoo, Research officer, Sabah Forestry Department: Eyen is lead author for this report and she will introduce the Red List of Dipterocarpaceae report which is due to be released next month.
