Poppy Papaver Somniferum  – Hungarian Blue also known as the Opium Poppy, is a striking heirloom that is an upright Annual that boasts large, bowl-shaped flowers that are a violet-blue. Black blotches are present at the base of the petals, which provides these flowers with additional beauty! These flowers rise atop sturdy stems that have silvery, deeply lobed leaves. They are followed by decorative seed pods that you can then use for dried floral arrangements. They can be grown in either full sun or partial shade in moist but well-draining soils, will grow between 2 – 3 feet tall, and have a blooming season that lasts for weeks in the Summer. This plant will self-sow and is also drought tolerant. These showy flowers will attract pollinators to your gardens such as Butterflies and Bees while being resistant to Deer and Rabbits. It is important to note that this plant is harmful if eaten. This Poppy is toxic to humans, cats, and dogs! It is recommended to wear gloves when handling this plant. These flowers can be used for cut flowers, in dried floral arrangements, and will give a nice color punch to your beds and borders! It is native to the eastern Mediterranean but has now naturalized across much of Asia and Europe. I urge anyone buying seed to do their homework on germination, I have not raised and cannot raise many of these plants as I am sub-tropics here in St Augustine, Florida. All seed are NOT alike!  There are so many different factors in germination and not doing a search is throwing your money away. I want everyone to be successful when growing your flowers from seed it is the most rewarding experience in Gardening and you can do it, if you give the seed what it needs to grow. I always check 3 sites of info to choose how I will go about it. It is not hard to do, if you do it right!
