Big rangy shade tree wattle found across most of the eastern and southern states in moist soil and sheltered places. Suitable for acreage away from buildings and pipes.

Cream pompom flowers appear in spring between the long slender leaves. Excellent timber tree for fancy work like musical instruments and fine furniture.

Description

Acacia melanoxylon - blackwood, sally wattle

APPEARANCE :Large native wattle tree with long slender leaves; pale cream pompom flowers in spring over a long season. After flowering, curly seedpods appear, the seeds are black and encased in a pink loop. Fast-growing and very tall in ideal conditions.
ORIGIN : Found right around the eastern and southern states of Australia in moist sheltered bushland.
USE FOR : Shade tree, acreage, firewise gardens, timber production. Tolerant of coastal conditions. Not suitable for planting near houses or pipes.
CLIMATE: Frost-hardy to -7C.
PLANTING: Plant in any soil in full sun or part shade. Mulch and water regularly until the plant is established, usually around 12 weeks. It is considered a potential weed in parts of TAS so please check with your local council here.
CARE : Can be grown as a hedge or windbreak, in which case prune regularly to maintain shape.
HEIGHT & WIDTH :3m to 45m H depending on situation
