Best uses

Use in shady, damp parts of the garden. Adiantum hispidulum is especially effective under trees and shrubs and in shaded woodland areas. The fern also looks good in containers on a shaded patio.

Physical characteristics

Evergreen, clumping fern that grows up to 60cm tall.

Flowers and foliage

Fronds emerge tinged reddish-pink and mature to green.

Preferred site

Grow in fertile, well-drained soil in partial shade. If planted in full shade, the reddish colour of the new fronds will not be as deep.

Preparation for planting

Always choose healthy, well-grown plants and plant after autumn rains. Before planting, ensure the root ball is saturated and remove the planter pot with minimal root disturbance. Trim any broken roots and plant at the same level as in the container. Dig a hole twice the diameter of the root ball, press in and water once planted. Make sure plants are watered well until established if planting in a drier period. Plant with some general slow-release fertiliser.

Surprisingly, ferns are not that fussy about soil as long as the small roots are able to spread through an organic layer. Most species preferring good drainage.

Maintenance tips

Apply mulch annually to help suppress weeds and conserve moisture. Feed annually in spring with a balanced fertiliser, such as blood and bone, at a handful per square metre in spring, as new growth appears. Watering is usually necessary during dry summer months to keep the roots moist.

Pests and diseases

Pest and disease free.
