The long, narrow leaves (2-4" long by 0.1-0.3" wide) are alternate (sometimes opposite), simple, oblanceolate with small stipules sometimes present. Young stems are purple and mature to gray-green.

Salix purpurea 'Nana' is a dioecious, compact, rounded shrub well-suited for wet areas, rain gardens, and bank stablizition. Tolerates heavy pruning.
