Acaena (Acaena Inermis Purpurea)
The Acaena plant is very decorative! It has purple fern-like foliage that is low growing, and sports an array of thornless flowers. Acaena Inermis is one of the most beautiful ground covers you can have. It can tolerate some foot traffic, but it is best to clip old flowers off before the seedpods start to develop. These seedpods are red-brown in color. The Acaena is also known as Purple Sheep's Burr and Purple Goose-Leaf.
The Purple Sheep's Burr is native to New Zealand. The common place to find it is in the open, montane, grassy and subalpine lands of New Zealand. The Acaena forms a mat ground cover and will grow up to 2'' tall while spreading to fill a 2' space. The leaves are comprised of tiny toothed leaflets that are about 1'' long. The Goose-Leaf foliage will range in color beginning with green, then moving to a purple-bronze. Spherical clusters of small, white flowers grow above the purple foliage and will turn into ornate burr-like seed heads that are red in color.

How to Grow
The Acaena is at its best when grown in moist, well-draining, sandy soil. It can tolerate some shade if grown in a climate where the summers are hot, but it does best in full sun. It is tolerant of shallow, rocky, and poor soils if they are well-draining.
Plant your Acaena outside, after the last frost, or in autumn. The typical germination timeframe is 10 - 12 weeks. Keep plants at a temperature between 50° to 59°F. Space plants 3 - 5 inches apart and at a depth of 1/8th of an inch.
If you decide to start the plant off inside, plant it 12 weeks before transplanting outside.
