Malnutrition is one of the major problems in the whole Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) province of Pakistan in general and in the northern parts of KPK in particular is mainly due to the protein deficiency in the diet. Food legumes have an important role to play not only in increasing the quantity of food but in improving the quality of their cereal based diets. Nutritionists characterize the common bean as a nearly perfect food because of its high protein content and generous amounts of fiber, complex carbohydrates, and other dietary necessities. Common bean has a very promising future in Pakistan and therefore attempt should be made to improve its yield through development of the high yielding varieties and better agronomic practices. Improvement in production will lead to attain self sufficiency which will decrease malnutrition and protein deficiency in diets, and will decrease dependence on costly animal’s proteins. Its short growth duration of two to three months could fit easily this crop in the various cropping systems in the northern parts KPK, which is the potential bean area. Common bean is locally known as KURKHY, KALUL, or SHOOPAR, and its stipules do not have appendages below their point of attachment to the stem. Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L.) is locally known as LOBIA, having stipules appendages below their point of attachment to the stem. It is hoped that this book entitled “Common Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.): The unexploited but the potential food legume crop in the Northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan” will be of some value to researchers and students of agronomy, and even useful to other departments graduates, researchers and extension workers, as well as the policy makers and that the benefits of their insight will reach the growers in the northern KPK which will not only increase common bean productivity and sustainability, but probably may also reduce its import to save huge amount of foreign exchange.
