In Vitro antibacterial activity and phytochemical analysis of some selected medicinal plants2010 •
The antibacterial activity of various solvent extracts of medicinal plants was evaluated against the human pathogenic bacteria Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonia, Bacillus subtilis Bacillus cereus, Salmonella typhi, Enterobacter aerogenes and Staphylococcus aureus by agar cup diffusion method. Methanol extracts of Clerodendrum inerme L., Terminalia chebula Retz., Curcuma amada Roxb., Anacardium occidentale L., Duranta repens L., Eucalyptus camaldulenis Dehnh and Euphorbia cotinifolia L. showed significant activity. The petroleum ether and chloroform extracts of Terminalia chebula, Curcuma amada and Piper betel also showed promising results. The antibacterial activity of promising plant extracts when compared with standard drugs streptomycin and gentamycin recorded siginificant inhibition. Phytochemical analysis of the different extracts of the screened plants indicated the presence of flavanoids, terpinoids, tannins steriodas, alkaloids and glysocides. The positive results of screening of medicinal plants for antibacterial activity forms primary platform for further phytochemical and pharmacological studies.

Preliminary screening of antimicrobial properties of few medicinal plants2010 •
Crude extracts were prepared from the leaves of ten medicinal plants viz., Alpinia galanga, Artabotrys uncinatus, Commelina benghalensis, Costus igneus, Euphorbia cyathopora, Justicia gendarussa, Kalanchoe pinnata, Panicum antidotale, Sauropus androgynous and Hibiscus using methanol as solvent and screened for their antibacterial activity against ten bacterial pathogens. The tested gram positive bacterial strains were Bacillus cerus, Bacillus megaterium, Micrococcus leuteus, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus lactis , and gram negative strains were Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Enterobacter aerogenes, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Salmonella typhimurium . Among the ten plants tested, the methanol extracts of Alpinia galanga , Artabotrys uncinatus, Costus igneus and Yellow Hibiscus exhibited higher antibacterial activity when compared to the other plant extracts. These four plant extracts were further used for the phytochemical analysis. Results of the phytochemical analysi...

Phytochemical Screening and Antimicrobial Activity Evaluation of Selected Medicinal Plants in EthiopiaThe extract of many plants used in traditional medicine contain a wide range of curative agents that are used in many modern medicines. In the present study phytochemical analysis and in vitro antibacterial activities of the n-butanolic extracts of Terminalia arjuna, Cleome viscosa and Leucas aspera having ethnomedicinal uses collected from the Kadapa district were tested. The phytochemical studies of the extracts revealed the presence of carbohydrates, tannins, alkaloids, flavonoids, steroids, glycosides in all plants. The extracts were subjected for screening of in vitro antibacterial activity against selected major human pathogenic bacterial strains like Bacillus substilis, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonia, Proteus vulgaris, and Staphylococcus aureus by agar well diffusion method. The results of antibacterial activity revealed that all the extracts showed excellent inhibitory activity against all the tested pathogens and the Cleome viscosa extract showed comparatively better activity than the other extracts.

In-vitro Antimicrobial Activities and Phytochemical Screening of Selected Plant Extracts against Some Medically and Agriculturally Important PathogensIn Ethiopia, many plants are used for medicinal drive-by old-style naturopaths without any scientific justification for their therapeutic values. The principal aim of this study were to evaluate the in vitro antibacterial and antifungal activities of the leaf, root and stem bark extracts of Rhamnus prinioides (gesho), Justicia schimperiana (sensel) and Ruta chalepensis (Tena adam) against some common pathogenic species of bacteria and fungi. The results of this study shown that the crude extracts of ethanol, methanol, hexane and water crude extracts had antimicrobial activities on most bacterial and fungi species of some solvent extracts. Ethanol and methanol crude extracts had the highest growth inhibitory effects as compared with those of the aqueous and hexane crude extracts. But, the four solvent crude extracts had fewer antimicrobial activities than commercially available drug(chloramphenicol and clotrimazole). Campylobacter jejuni and Staphylococcus aureus were found to be the...
