Various species in genus Hibiscus are traditionally known for their therapeutic attributes. The present study focused on the phytochemical analysis of a rather unexplored species Hibiscus caesius (H. caesius), using high-pressure liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS). The analysis revealed five major compounds in the aqueous extract, viz. vanillic acid, protocatechoic acid, quercetin, quercetin glucoside and apigenin, being reported for the first time in H. caesius. Literature suggests that these compounds have important pharmacological traits such as anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and hepatoprotective etc. however, this requires further pharmacological investigations at in vitro and in vivo scale. The above study concluded the medicinal potential of H. caesius.

CHEMICAL AND BIOLOGICAL STUDY OF AQUEOUS EXTRACT OF Hibiscus sabdariffa Linn. (MALVACEAE)2019 •
Hibiscus sabdariffa, popularly known as Hibiscus, Vinegar or Guinea okra, is a plant that has gained a great deal of interest in academic research. Most likely due to its antioxidant property. The preliminary phytochemical profile of the aqueous extract of the chalices of Hibiscus sabdariffa presented flavonoids, anthocyanins, coumarins and saponins. The antioxidant potential was 324.95 mM Trolox/g as measured by ABTS. The median lethal dose (LD50) of the extract was 1000 ppm. The extract showed 24 μL antimicrobial action and synergism when associated with Chloramphenicol discs in strains of wild Escherichia coli (AB 1157). According to the results of the Spectrophotometric and Conductiometric tests, the extract presented good stability against UV radiation, exposure to oxygen and temperature increase. Anthocyanins: 3-sambubioside cyanidin and 3-sambubioside delphinidin were identified as the major constituent of the extract through UHPLC-ESI-TOF-MS.

The aqueous extracts of Hibiscus calyphyllus (HcA), Hibiscus micranthus (HmA), and Hibiscus deflersii (HdA) growing in Saudi Arabia did not receive enough attention in phytochemical and biological studies. This inspired the authors to investigate the phytochemicals of these extracts for the first time using UPLC-ESI-MS/MS in negative and positive ionization modes. The analysis afforded the tentative identification of 103 compounds including phenolic compounds, flavonoids, and anthocyanins. Moreover, in vitro evaluations of their cytotoxic, antioxidant, antidiabetic, and antiobesity activities were carried out. The results showed that aqueous extract of Hibiscus calyphyllus had the highest activity as an antioxidant agent (SC50 = 111 ± 1.5 μg/mL) compared with ascorbic acid (SC50 = 14.2 ± 0.5 μg/mL). MTT assay was used to evaluate cytotoxic activity compared to cisplatin. Hibiscus deflersii showed the most potent cytotoxic effect against A-549 (human lung carcinoma) with IC50=50±5.1μg/mL, and Hibiscus micranthus showed a close effect with IC50 = 60.4 ± 1.7 μg/mL. Hibiscus micranthus showed the most potent effect on HCT-116 (human colon carcinoma) with IC50 = 56 ± 1.9 μg/mL compared with cisplatin (IC50 = 7.53 ± 3.8 μg/mL). HcA and HdA extracts showed weak cytotoxic activity against A-549 and HCT-116 cell lines compared to the other extracts. Eventually, Hibiscus deflersii showed astonishing antidiabetic (IC50=56±1.9μg/mL) and antiobesity (IC50=95.45±1.9μg/mL) activities using in vitro α-amylase inhibitory assay (compared with acarbose (IC50 = 34.71 ± 0.7 μg/mL)) and pancreatic lipase inhibitory assay (compared with orlistat (IC50 = 23.8 ± 0.7 μg/mL)), respectively. In conclusion, these findings are regarded as the first vision of the phy- tochemical constituents and biological activities of different Hibiscus aqueous extracts. Hibiscus deflersii aqueous extract might be a hopeful origin of functional constituents with anticancer (on A-549 cell line), antidiabetic, and antiobesity activities. It might be a natural alternative remedy and nutritional policy for diabetes and obesity treatment without negative side effects. Isolation of the bioactive phytochemicals from the aqueous extracts of aerial parts of Hibiscus calyphyllus, Hibiscus micranthus, and Hibiscus deflersii and estimation of their biological effects are recommended in further studies.

The Agilent 5975C Series GC/MS and a DB-WAX fused silica column (30 m x 0.25 mm i.d., film thickness 0.25 μm). Oven temperature was programmed to 60 0C for 10 min, and then increased at 200C/min to 2300C and held at 2500C for 10 min. The carrier gas, helium, was adjusted to a linear velocity of 30 cm/s. Phenolic compounds of Hibiscus sabdariffa and influence of organic residues on its antioxidant and antitumoral properties2015 •
The aim of this study was to evaluate the phenolic and flavonoids contents and the antioxidant and antitumoral activity of leaf and calyx methanolic extracts from Hibiscus sabdariffa (roselle) cultivated with poultry litter and organosuper® under three modes of application. The total phenolic content in the each extract was determined using the Folin-Ciocalteu reagent and for aluminium chloride flavonoids.
