Two Flavan Derivatives Isolated from Artocarpus dadah Grown in Lampung, Indonesia2013 •
2006 •
Phytochemical study of the leaves of Goniothalamus tenuifolius King led to the isolation of two flavonoids including 3,5,7, 3'4'-pentamethoxyflavone and 5,3',4-trihydroxy-3,7-dimethoxyflavone. From the heartwood of Artocarpus gomezianus Wall. exTre'c. six flavonoids were isolated. They were identified as a new flavonoid named artogomezianone and five known flavonoids namely cycloatocarpin, isocyclomorusin, norcycloartocarpin, artocarpin and norartocarpetin. Furthermore, oxyresveratrol and a mixture of steroids consisting of Beta-sitosterol and stigmasterol were obtained. The identification and structure elucidation of the isolated compounds were achieved by analysis of their spectroscopic data (UV, IR, MS, NMR) in comparison with previously reported data. Evaluation of the anti-herpes simplex virus activity of the isolated compounds indicated moderate activity against both types of herpes simplex virus for cycloartocarpin, isocyclomorusin, norartocarpetin and oxyresv...

Antibacterial activity of flavan-3-ol derivative compound from dichloromethane extract of Artocarpus dasyphylla tree bark2019 •
Infectious disease is one of sources of high morbidity and mortality caused by bacteria. Artocarpus plant is biosource to discover compounds with interesting bioactivites. The objective of this study is to find antibacterial compound from nature by extraction, fractionation, identification, and antibacterial test of secondary metabolite from dichloromethane extract of Artocarpus dasyphylla tree bark. The dichloromethane extract was fractionated repeatedly using various chromatographic techniques. The secondary metabolite was identified of its molecular structure based on UV-Vis, IR, NMR spectral data and confirmed by comparation with the reference. The secondary metabolite was known as catechin or 5,7,3’,4’-tetrahydroxyflavan-3β-ol. Antibacterial testing of cathecin against Escherechia coli and Staphylococcus aureus showed a low antibacterial activity.
The present study was carried out to evaluate the phytochemical, antibacterial and antifungal activity of methanol and aqueous extract of Elephantopus scaber Linn. leaf on selected five bacterial pathogens such as Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Leuconostoc lactis and Salmonella typhi and four fungal strains Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus, Rhizopus indicus and Mucor indicus. For antimicrobial test, well diffusion technique was used and the zone of inhibition of microorganisms was measured in mm. The leaf extract of E. scaber showed not much potential antimicrobial activities against the selected strains and the maximum inhibition zone 28 mm was recorded from 200mg of methanol extract of E. scaber against Streptococcus pyogenes and minimum (18mm) by the above pathogen at 50 mg of methanol extract. The methanolic extract showed the maximum antifungal activity 32mm inhibition zone was recorded from 200mg of extract against Mucor indicus and minimum 14mm by 50 mg of extract against Rhizopus indicus. The phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of Alkaloids, Flavonoids, Saponins, Tannins, Phenols, Proteins and Carbohydrates in varying concentration.
Phytochemical investigation of leaves and stembark of Artocarpus lacucha collected in Thailand resulted in three yet undescribed isomeric flavan-3-ol derivatives (1–3), the four known compounds gambircatechol (4), (+)-catechin (5), (+)-afzelechin (6) and the stilbene oxyresveratrol (7). Compounds 1 to 3 feature 6/6/5/6/5/6 core structures. All structures were deduced by NMR and MS, while density functional theory (DFT) calculations on B3LYP theory level were performed of compounds 1 to 3 to support the stereochemistry in positions 2 and 3 in the C-ring. Possible biosynthetic pathways leading to 4 are discussed. The DPPH assay revealed high radical scavenging activities for 1 (EC50 = 9.4 ± 1.0 µmol mL−1), 2 (12.2 ± 1.1), 3 (10.0 ± 1.5) and 4 (19.0 ± 2.6), remarkably lower than ascorbic acid (EC50 = 34.9) and α-tocopherol (EC50 = 48.6). A cytotoxicity assay revealed moderate but consistent antiproliferative properties of 1 in CH1/PA-1 (ovarian teratocarcinoma) and SW480 (colon carcino...

Antibacterial Activity of Two Flavans from the Stem Bark of Embelia schimperi2018 •
Embelia schemperi Vatke is one of the medicinal plants used traditionally for treatment of intestinal tape worm, dysmenorrheal, bacterial, and fungal infections. Phytochemical screening test of the dichloromethane/methanol (1 : 1) and methanol extracts revealed the presence of phenols, alkaloids, tannins, and flavonoids whereas terpenoids, glycoside, and phytosterols were absent. Silica gel column chromatographic separation of the methanol extract afforded 3,5,7,3′,4′-pentahydroxyflavan, named epicatechin (1), along with a close flavan derivative (2). Structures of the compounds were elucidated by spectroscopic techniques (1D and 2D NMR, FTIR, and UV-Vis). The crude extracts and isolated compounds were screened for in vitro antibacterial activity against strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Cryptococcus neoformans, Shigella dysentriae, and Staphylococcus aureus. Epicatechin (1) exhibited comparable antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli (15 and 12 mm zon...
