Wild places in this parish

Stoney Stanton lies in the south-east of Leicestershire and within Blaby District. As the name suggests, it has a long history of association with stone as it lies on rocky outcrops of granite. Past mining activity has created sites such as the diving and sports centre, Stoney Cove. This in addition to the Clint's Hill quarry are havens for wildlife. The village was mentioned in the Domesday Book and the church of St. Michael's was first recorded in 1149.

Cotton-wool Gall

Look out for some early plant galls appearing on male English Oak catkins now, caused by the tiny gall-wasps. More...

Verges for wildlife

Parish Councils are being invited by Leicestershire County Council to take over the management of selected road verges in their area in order to improve their value for wildlife. So far, over 50 verges have been adopted and all have been, or will be, surveyed by NatureSpot to find out which species are already growing there. Surveys by NatureSpot have revealed a surprising diversity of flora with an average of over 30 species on each verge. Encourage your parish council to take part! More information about the project can be found here.
