Western Fairy Slipper (Calypso bulbosa var. occidentalis)

Western fairy slipper (Calypso bulbosa var. occidentalis) is a small, but strikingly beautiful orchid which is native to California and found throughout the west as far north as Alaska. Although this showy wildflower can produce its own energy through photosynthesis, it is also known to supplement its nourishment through a mycorrhizal relationship with underground fungi, and therefore often favors the semi-shaded environment of conifer forests. Additional common names include Calypso orchid, Pacific fairy slipper, and Venus's slipper.
