Species Description

Scattered in England and Wales, mainly around coasts. Most common around Liverpool. Habitat includes: Rough, grassy places such as parks, gardens, roadside verges, roundabouts, coasts, sand dunes etc. Growing habit: Evergreen Perennial. Height: Up to 2m. Flowers: June to August. originating from cultivation around 1910. It is becoming increasingly well-established in the wild. First recorded from the wild in 1981.

Brachyglottis x jubar P.D. Sell (B. 'Sunshine', Senecio greyi auct. non Hook. f.; ?B. laxifolia (Buchanan) B. Nord. x B. compacta (Kirk) B. Nord.) - Shrub Ragwort.

Spreading shrub to 1(2)m; leaves ≤8cm, oblong-elliptic, entire to remotely denticulate; capitula 2-4.5cm across; ligules about 13, 10-15mm. Neophyte-survivor; much grown in gardens as B. 'Sunshine' or Senecio greyi and often mass planted by roads, etc., persistent on rough ground; scattered in Britain, Ireland, and Isle of Man, mostly coastal; garden origin.

Key:

  • Leaves <8cm, entire to denticulate or tightly undulate; capitula >1cm across, yellow; ligules conspicuous; phyllaries with woolly hairs along more or less whole length
  • Many leaves >4cm, entire to remotely denticulate
