Schizachyrium scoparium (Little Bluestem) is a native perennial grass that grows in foot-wide clumps from three to four feet tall with blue-gray to green blade-shaped foliage and white or tan flowers that turn to small white seed heads in the fall. Little bluestem is a highly adaptable plant, proving tolerant to snow, rain, drought, flood, deer browsing, and a variety of soils including clay and saline conditions, but does best in drier soils.

The 'Smoke Signal' cultivar is somewhat similar to the 'Standing Ovation' cultivar, with deep blue colors with red tips on the leaf blades, which take on deeper hues of red and maroon in the fall, 'Smoke Signal' however, improves upon previous cultivars by maintaining its strictly upright stature through the fall and winter.
