Baptisia tinctoria (Yellow Wild Indigo) Unity Grown

Baptisia tinctoria, commonly referred to as yellow wild indigo or horseflyweed, is a small, native perennial wildflower that yields small, vibrant yellow flowers from May to June which are attractive to butterflies and other pollinators. These flowers transition to striking black seed pods in the late summer and fall, providing attractive interest and persisting through winter; winter seed presence makes yellow wild indigo especially valuable to the birds that feed on its seedpods.

Well adapted to dry conditions and tolerant of poor soils, Baptisia tinctoria is a hardy species, but is not recommended for transplantation after establishment due to the presence of a deep taproot. At maturity, yellow wild indigo typically reaches about two feet tall, and prefers acidic, sandy loams and full sun conditions.
