Perennial, very variable. Rhizomes long, 3-10 mm broad, covered with broad scale-leaves; tubers absent. Stems 20-150 cm, solitary. Leaves 2-10 mm broad, shorter than sterns or equalling them, scattered up stem. Bracts 2-6, outer longer than inflorescence. Inflorescence a simple or compound umbel; rays 2-10, to 35 cm, Spikelets 4-25 x 1-2 mm, linear to oblong, ascending or patent, with 6-32 flowers. Rachilla broadly winged. Glumes 2-3 x 1.5-2 mm, ovate or elliptic, obtuse, dark brown or reddish-brown with green keel. Stamens 3. Nut 1/3-1/2 x glumes, obovate-oblong or ellipsoid-trigonous, brownish- black. Fl. 5-9. Phragmites swamps, streamsides, muddy river banks, sea shores, ditches etc., s.l.-1860 m.
