Growth

Bauhinia acuminata is a deciduous perennial growing to approximately 4-10 metres tall and a similar width, the tree has beautiful unusually shaped leaves, that are around 10 cm in size that can be described as a Siamese twin leaf, or a camel’s hoof and basically look like 2 leaves have attached and grown together. The purple-fuchsia flowers are around 12 cm’s in diameter; have 5 petals and bloom in autumn.

Although it is native to tropical areas, the Purple Orchid Tree can be grown successfully in temperate areas; but will need extra care in the way of protection from frost; drought and wind. The branches of this species can be broken during stormy weather; so, it is best planted in a spot where it will have some protection from heavy winds.

Orchid trees can be grown in pots and containers.

HOW TO GROW BAUHINIA PURPUREA (Purple Orchid Tree)

NOTE: Orchid Trees do prefer tropical climates. In cooler areas, it is possible to grow but does require more maintenance in the way of protecting from frost & mulching during winter.

Step 1

Mildly scarify the seeds by scraping them against concrete or by nicking them slightly with a knife. Put seeds into hot, not boiling water and leave overnight.

Step 2

Sow each seed 5 mm deep into well drained soil in small- medium pots. Moisten and then move into a sunny position. Keep moist during the entire germination period.

If not in a tropical location, it is best to germinate these in a greenhouse or to cover your pots with clear plastic, glass or glad wrap to maintain a humid environment – this can be slowly removed as the seedling develops to allow the young plant to acclimatise.

Temperatures needed for germination are 22-28°C / 72-79°F

Seeds usually begin to germinate around 3-4 weeks in ideal conditions.

Step 3

Transplant seedlings once they reach 15 cm (6 in) in height either directly into the ground or into a larger pot. If this is necessary earlier, they can be moved safely once they have at least 2-3 true adult leaves.

Step 4

Transplant to final position after any chance of frosts have well passed. Once established, can survive some cold and drought but is best mulched at the base for protection.

Purple Orchid Trees can take between 2-3 years to flower.
