Toona sinensis, commonly known as Chinese cedar, is a perennial deciduous tree belonging to the mahogany family, Meliaceae. This large tree is known to be able to grow between 40 to 60 feet tall and has alternating pinnately compound leaves. The leaflets are 2 to 4 inches long with serrated margins and a glossy dark green epidermis. Toona sinensis blooms in late spring to early summer with small clusters of fragrant white to pink flowers. The tree has many uses including being edible, medicinal, and good lumber material. The young foliage is used as a vegetable in China and is known to have an onion-like flavor. The lumber is hard and reddish which is used for furniture. The young leaves are medicinally used to combate cough problems and help with digestion. The tree thrives in moderately moist well draining soil with neutral to slightly acidic pH and full to partial sun exposure. USDA plant hardiness zone 7a to 10b.

Toona sinensis seeds benefit from a 24 hour soak in warm water prior to planting.T. sinensis seeds require consistent moisture and humidity to germinate, but soil should not be soaking wet. Cloning boxes, ziplock bags, and other containers that retain moisture are ideal to store sown pots. Use a well draining sterilized soil mix. Seeds should be sown on top of potting mixture and lightly covered with a thin layer of sand or potting mix, just enough to cover the seeds. Space seeds at least an inch apart. Germinating pots should be kept indoors out of extreme light and heat. Ideal germination temperatures range from 70°F to 80°F. Germination typically takes 2 to 4 weeks to occur. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic.
