Opuntia ficus-indica is the most commercially significant cacti. They are considered to be as economically important as blue agave and maize in Mexico. It is widely cultivated for its delicious fruit known as tunas, as well as the cactus pads which are used as a vegetable known as nopales in Latin American cuisine. Opuntia ficus-indica is considered to be an invasive species in northern Africa. Hardy to USDA zones 8-12.

Opuntia ficus-indica have a hard waterproof seed coat that requires scarification for reliable germination. Use sandpaper or nail clippers to scratch through the seed coat. Plant the seeds ⅛” deep in a well draining potting soil and keep moist but not soaking wet.Keep around 70°F to 80°F for best results. Seed germination can be sporadic, typically taking 10 to 180 days.
