Description Perennial herb, 30-90cm long. Stems erect or gradually ascending, up to 40cm high, unbranched or 1-3 pairs branched in the lower part. Stems slender usually prostrate, covered with appressed hair or combined with unfolded soft hair. Leaves opposite, or leaves at the top of the stem alternate, ovate or broadly ovate, 1.2-3.8cm long, 0.8-2.6cm wide, apex short and acuminate, base rounded, entire, sparsely appressed by coarse wool on both sides, usually dense below, above cystolith punctiform, dense, basal veins 3; lateral veins one pair; petiole length 0.3-1.6cm; stipules ovate-lanceolate, shed; leaf blade membranous, ovate to broadly ovate. Flowers bisexual; flower small, glomerules diameter 1-2.5mm. Male flowers 4 base, tepals 1.5mm long, base connate; female perianth oval or nearly rhombic, 0.8mm long, apex with 2 small teeth, densely pilose; synoecious; male flowers light green or purplish, tepals ovoid, ca. 1mm long, apex acute or tapers towards the end, sparsely pubescent, stamens 4, prominent. Achenes ovoid, 1.2mm long, apex acute, yellowish white, brown above or all black, glossy. Flowering: autumn.
Distribution Growing on grasslands, paddy sides, in hill thickets or thin forests. Distributed in South Anhui, West Zhejiang, Fujian, Taiwan, Jiangxi, Hubei, Hunan, Guangdong, Hainan, Guangxi, Yunnan, Sichuan and South Gansu. The medicinal materials are mainly produced in Guangdong, Fujian and etc.
Part Used Medical part: whole plant with roots. Chinese name: Wushuige.
Harvest & Processing Can be harvested throughout the year, washed, used fresh or sundried.
Properties & Actions Taste sweet, tasteless, and cold in nature.Clearing heat-toxin, detumescence and expelling pus, disinhibiting diuresis and relieving strangury.
Indications & Usage Used for pyocutaneous disease and superficial infection, mammary abscess, anemogenous toothache, dysentery, diarrhea, painful stramgutia, whitish and turbid urine.Oral administration: decocting, 15-30g, fresh products double in amount. External application: appropriate amount, smashed for applying; or pounded to extract juice mouth rinse.
Examples 1. Traumatic fracture (stabilize with small splint after restoration), ulcerative carbuncle: fresh leaves of ceylon pouzolzia, take an appropriate amount, pestle and apply onto the lesions, or make dry powder and prepare with liquor, wrap onto the lesions.
2. Scleroderma: leaves of ceylon pouzolzia and triquetrous tadehagi, pestle with salt and apply onto the lesions externally; smear and wash with decocted water of ceylon pouzolzia stem and triquetrous tadehagi.
