Native to South Africa, this lovely and unusual perennial goes by many names; Fortnight Lily, White African Iris, Butterfly Iris, and Morea Lily. These are evergreen perennials with green sword-like foliage that stands erect in large clumps and makes a dramatic vertical statement in the garden The upright clumps of leaves are held in a vertical fanlike position and spread on creeping rhizomes. Iris-like flowers are produced throughout spring and summer in light, dappled shade to part sun. Once established, Fortnight Lilies tolerate poor, dry soils, but do best in a well drained soil with regular watering during the growing season. Dietes iridioides is somewhat shorter than Dietes vegeta and will grow 12-16 inches tall and spread 18-24 inches wide. Hardy to Zone 8. Pkt. 20

Lightly nick seeds and soak in slightly hot water for 24-48 hours. Sow in moist seed starting mix and keep at 39-45°F for 3 months. May be sown in cold frame in late fall or early winter or kept in refrigerator before bringing to a warm area 20°C/68°F. for germination which usually takes 1-3 months.
