Terminalia catappa

Locally known as Talisai, the Almond Nut is a large deciduous tree that can reach heights of over 90 feet with equally long spreading branches. An ornamental looking tree with green leaves turning pinkish-red to red then yellow before falling.

The ripened pinkish to reddish flesh covering the seed coat can be eaten raw. The nuts can be eaten raw or roasted and tastes just like commercially grown almonds. Its leaf, fruit and nut are known to have medicinal properties.

Grow almond nut in frost free areas in full sun in well draining soil. It is well adapted to salt soils and also grows well inland up to 3,000 feet elevation; tolerates windy areas, loves lots of water though it is drought tolerant. Can be grown in large pots to control size. Plant seed 1 inch deep in porous well draining soil in 1/2 to 1 gallon pot or bag; keep moist and place in sunny to partly sunny location. Seed should germinate in approximately 2 weeks.
