Pulmonaria – Sissinghurst White Lungwort
SKU: n/a.Rare and Choice
A shade perennial adored by many, Sissinghurst White Lungwort, Pulmonaria, brings pure white flowers over speckled foliage. Starting mid-spring, dainty white flowers dangle like bells over a low mound of fascinating spotted leaves. After the flowers fade, you can enjoy its dark green leaves sprinkled with silver. A coveted and rare variety that only occasionally is available to gardeners.
A shade-loving perennial, it is useful to edge walkways, add exciting foliage to dull areas, and as a ground cover. Use Lungwort in shade and woodland gardens. Its magnificent foliage makes a beautiful display when planted among hostas, ferns, and bleeding hearts. Many consider its flowers among the most delightful of the early spring bloomers. Some say Lungwort was named due to its resemblance to the body part, but that’s not correct; it was used in the past to treat different lung ailments. Easy to grow, it prefers moist soil. Although plants tolerate light morning sun, they need afternoon shade. Remove flower stems immediately after bloom. Plants spread slowly by creeping roots. Named for the white garden at Sissinghurst Castle, one of the finest gardens in England. Sissinghurst was frequently visited by the fascinating writer Virginia Woolf, which was owned by Vita Sackville-West, Ms. Woolf’s special friend who inspired her writings.
Plant in shade to full shade in well-drained soil. Amend soil with compost or other organic matter, and to get roots off to a fast start, add a good starter fertilizer like Bio-tone Starter Plus when planting. Although tolerant of drought, plants will do best with consistent moisture. Dividing plants every three to five years will keep plants vigorous. It is best to divide plants immediately after flowering or in early fall.
