Wildflower series ~ Portulaca kermesina

portulaca kermesina.jpg

These little beauties caught my eye in one small spot and at first I thought it was another patch of Wild Sweetpeas but when I got closer, the leaves looked like they belong to one of the mesemb family with flowers that look those of the purslane family, a common garden weed that some people eat, but it turns out that this is an indigenous Portulaca and a species that is for sale in nurseries as a groundcover. Portulaca was previously part of the anacampseros family and looking at the flowers, it's easy to see why.

I don't know that the pea-like leaves are, I'll have to go back another time and see if I can identify those.

It is a little beauty. I’m going to skip over all the scientific name-talk and just pretend it is a wild sweetpea—it suits! Another bloom for my feed, so thank you for getting back onto the wildflower hunt! ❤️

We aim to please :P
