Description: Rhizomatous herbs. Leaves many, linear, purple-brown. Inflorescence a head of globose spikes, the central spike longer than the others, white. Nut obovate or oblong, biconvex, brownish.

Habitat: Waste places, degraded forest areas and grasslands
Flowering & Fruiting: July-November

Parts used: Tubers
Properties & Uses: Febrifuge, anti-diarrheal, stomachic, anthelmintic and expectorant. The tubers are used for the treatment of rheumatism, hyperdipsia, fever, diarrhea, verminosis, cough, bronchitis diabetes and fistula.
