Elephantopus scaber L.

  • Distribution: Pantropical
  • Description: Scapigerous herbs; whole plant scabrous. Leaves radical, obovate to oblong or oblanceolate; cauline leaves small, narrow, sessile, base amplexicaule. Heads homogamous, non-rayed, sessile, aggregated. Flowers bisexual, purple. Achenes 10-ribbed; pappus of 4-6 spiny bristles.

  • Habitat: Moist deciduous forests, also in the plains

  • Parts used: Root, leaves and flowers
  • Properties & Uses: Anti-pyretic and diuretic. The decoction of the root and leaves are given in intermittent fever, diarrhea and bronchitis. The flowers are recommended for ophthalmopathy, bronchitis, cough and swelling. The plant is also used for the treatment of piles.

  • Traditional Uses:The decoction of leaves and roots are taken internally against the fever. The leaves paste is applied on wounds for healing.
