Vinca, otherwise known as Periwinkle, make great groundcovers around stepping stone and along woodland paths because they can withstand some foot traffic with no damage. Their shiny, dark green, evergreen leaves are evenly spaced along long creeping or arching stems that root wherever they touch the ground. Periwinkles also produce elegant , funnel-shaped flowers, usually purple or blue, with five pedals arrayed in a pinwheel pattern . The flowers are most abundant in the spring, but the plants also bloom in summer and fall, especially when cooler weather returns.
