The native range of this species is Kenya to S. Africa, Madagascar, Mascarenes. It is a perennial and grows primarily in the seasonally dry tropical biome.

Cape Provinces, Free State, Kenya, KwaZulu-Natal, Madagascar, Mozambique, Namibia, Northern Provinces, Réunion, Swaziland, Tanzania

Extinct in:

Mauritius

Introduced into:

Madeira, New Caledonia, New South Wales, Queensland, Wallis-Futuna Is.
