    Description

    Seedling

Cotyledons elliptic, 5-8 x 3-5 mm, narrowed at the base, sessile, hairless. First leaves rosette-shaped, lanceolate, with 3-7 acute lobes on each side, directed forwards, hairless. The hypocotyl axis is short, 5 mm, whitish. Light green seedling.

    Adult plant

Glebionis coronaria is an annual, upright plant. The stem is branched, ridged, powerful, up to 1.20 m high and hairless. Leaves simple, alternate, deeply bipinnate, with lanceolate, mucronate lobes, the upper leaves sessile, auriculate at the base, light green. Capitula solitary at the top of a peduncle 15-20 cm long, large, 3-6 cm in diameter, involucral bracts broadly scarce, peripheral florets ligulate golden yellow, sometimes white or cream at the tip, ligule 15-20 mm long, and central florets tubular yellow. Peripheral achenes with narrowly 3-winged, central achenes winged on one side only, 2.5-3.5 mm long, without pappus.

Glebionis coronaria is a species that is spread both by the wind (anemochory) and by ants (myrmecochory). A small appendage opposite the hilum can be considered an elaiosome.

                      Local harmfulness

Algeria: Glebionis coronaria is a secondary "weed". It has an average ecological range but does not constitute an agronomic constraint due to its limited abundance. However, it can be used as an indicator of regional ecological conditions. Due to its wide distribution, it is a species to watch out for in the event of changes in the context, such as a change in the cropping system, which could lead to a disruption in the inter-specific competition relationships. This species can sometimes be abundant in winter cereals, catch crops or vineyards.

                          Local control

Algeria: Glebionis coronaria has become tolerant to pinoxaden-based herbicides but is controlled by diuron, iodosulfuron-methyl-sodium + mesosulfuron-methyl + mefenpyr-diethtyl, iodosulfuron-methyl-sodium + amidosulfuron-sodium + mefenpyr-diethyl, in annual crops, or by paraquat in perennial crops.
